Indoor Air Quality

5 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

At the end of a long day, your home is a refuge from the stress and strain of the world. It should also be a place where you can get away from any pollution which can affect your health. Lancaster, PA is considered to have low air quality among cities in the United States.

You may assume that your HVAC system will take care of maintaining air quality. The truth is that you could still be living with unhealthy levels of pollution, dust, and pet dander in your home.

Fortunately, there are many easy ways to improve indoor air quality. By making a few of these changes, you can enjoy fresh, contaminant-free air in your household.

1. Replace Air Filters

When was the last time you replaced the filters in your AC unit? While this equipment works wonders in keeping your air allergen-free, it eventually gets dirty.

This decreases their effectiveness, meaning that dust, pollen, and dander can slip through and travel throughout your home. Be sure to follow manufacturer recommendations and replace your filters.

2. Clean Regularly

A great way to keep contaminants out of your home’s air is to clean it regularly. It is recommended that you dust on a regular basis using microfiber cleaning supplies to trap small particles. You should vacuum rugs and carpets which may contain unseen dirt which can impact your indoor air quality.

It’s also essential to sanitize and “air out” your bathroom. Bathrooms tend to experience the most moisture and the least ventilation in a home. This creates the perfect atmosphere for mold to thrive, eventually releasing spores which may lead to illness. Keeping your bathroom mold and mildew-free can go a long way toward improving air quality in your home.

3. Get a Plant

A houseplant or two can improve your indoor air quality by absorbing harsh chemicals. Some of the most effective plants for this purpose include:

• Bamboo palm
• Peace lily
• Snake plant
• Philodendron
• Dracaena

For the best results, it is recommended that you place a plan every 50 feet inside your home.

4. Keep Pets Groomed

Shedding pets leads to hair and fur coating your furniture and floors. Getting your pets groomed regularly, especially when losing their winter coats, can lead to less hair in your air and air filters.

Even if your pets do not shed, bathing them regularly can decrease the amount of dander in your home. This is especially important if your furry friends spend time outside. They can bring in dirt and allergens which may affect your home’s air.

5. Use an Air Purifier

One of the easiest ways to improve indoor air quality is to add a HEPA filter. These devices will remove harmful contaminants that affect humans, including those originating from chemical cleaners and paint. HEPA filters are the most effective way to reduce airborne particles in your home.
