Gas Furnace Basics
One of the more common products we deal with at RSC is the gas furnace. A gas furnace is a device that converts either natural gas or propane into heat that is then distributed through an air duct system to warm your home. Other gas systems that distribute heat by water or steam baseboards and radiators are referred to as gas boilers.
Furnaces can be separated into two categories: condensing and non-condensing.
- A condensing gas furnace has a high combustion efficiency that usually starts at 90% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) or higher, and utilizes a PVC pipe to vent the combustion gases.
- A non-condensing gas furnace is less efficient around 80% AFUE, and it utilizes a standard chimney.
Benefits of Gas Heating Systems
Whether your home requires the use of a non-condensing furnace or can be modified for the high-efficiency condensing furnaces, there are many advantages of heating with a gas system.
Because the cost of natural gas and propane has been at all-time lows, you can expect to have great savings over fuel oil and most heat pumps or all electric systems. Gas furnaces are very reliable, have a life expectancy of 20-25 years and the level of comfort is unsurpassed.
