Why You Need a Generator for Your Home

Purchasing a generator for your home is one investment that often goes overlooked until you realize you are out of electricity for an indefinite amount of time. With the recent catastrophes of Hurricane Harvey and Irma, thousands of residents struggled to regain power in their homes. With unpredictable weather, here are some reasons why having a generator for your home is a worthy investment.

Saves You Money

Buying a generator may seem like a costly investment at first because you are buying it to be prepared for those “what if circumstances.” What if there is a hurricane? What if there is a flood? It is possible that these circumstances may never happen to you; but for some areas of the United States that experience hurricanes, tornados, blizzards and floods; a generator will pay for itself in no time. Think of how much money you can save just on food alone. During power outages, a lot of families will have to throw away the food that is stored in the fridge and freezer. For a home that loses power often, a generator can save you a lot of money just in the cost of food alone that would go to waste if you didn’t have a generator to restore the electricity in your home.

Keeps Your Home Secure

If your home has a security system, it needs constant power to keep your home safe and secure. If the electricity is out in your home, your security system will be off. This leaves your home at risk for a second catastrophe; a break in. Keep your family safe at all times by having a backup generator to power your security system in the event that severe weather causes you to lose power.

Types of Generators

There are two main kinds of generators that can provide electricity for your home. The first kind is a portable generator. Portable generators can be used for both residential areas and for outdoor activities such as camping. Portable generators can run on multiple kinds of fuel, but are not made to provide enough power output for an entire home. A portable generator also requires a manual start each time it needs to be used.

The second kind of generator is a standby generator. Standby generators are larger and are installed to permanently stay in their location outside of the home. This kind of a generator has the capacity to power an entire home and usually is powered off a gas line to maintain a steady flow of electricity. Standby generators can be set up to automatically turn on as soon as your power goes out. This allows you to not have to worry about manually turning your generator on in the dark or if you are away from home.

We offer plenty of insight about the different types of generators on the market. Regardless of the generator you choose to install in your home, you are making a crucial investment in your home and in your family’s safety.
