Preparing Your Air Conditioning Systems for Summer Vacation

Now that summer has begun, vacations and planning are in full swing. A common practice that people tend to forget about is what to do with their home appliances before leaving for their destination.

Simply forgetting to tune your thermostat or other appliances before that 14-day vacation can result in a hefty home energy bill. Here are some tips on how to prepare your home for when you are away.

Thermostat Tips

  • Set your thermostat to a higher temperature so that energy is not wasted while you’re not home. This goes for heating, too, adjust your thermostat correctly during the colder months so that pipes do not freeze.
  • Make sure you do not completely turn off your thermostat, as this could eliminate airflow in the home and potentially harm houseplants and animals that can survive on their own for extended periods.
  • Investing in a smart thermostat will make traveling easier as you can adjust the settings on the go. If you already own a smart thermostat, check to see if the latest updates are installed before your trip.

Air Conditioners

  • Every 90 days is when you should replace an air filter, but it’s still important to make sure your air filter is functioning before you head out on vacation.
  • Check your ac units to make sure there has been no damage to them since your last inspection. This goes for indoor and outdoor appliances.

Additional Home Considerations

  • Closing your blinds will not only deter those from looking into your home, but will keep uninvited sunlight out, helping to control the temperature of your rooms.
  • Unplug or turn off appliances that do not need to run while you are on vacation.
  • If you are leaving for an extended period, consider shutting off the water.
  • Double-check your doors and windows to make sure they are locked and secure.
  • Take the trash and recycling out.
  • Set your home security alarm system.
